Artist Statement

I work with fabric and stitch because fabric is an essential part of our lives. It has a universal resonance. From birth to death it covers us and surrounds us in our homes. Fabric is tactile and colorful and can be manipulated in many ways. I can cut it, tear it, fold it, paint it or bleach it. Most of all, I can change its surface by stitching. The act of stitching connects me to my foremothers and to every other woman who has ever held a needle in her hands. Working with fabric and stitch allows me to express my creativity in a way no other medium can do.

Largely self-taught, I've been making art in the form of stitched textiles since the early 1980's. Inspiration for my art comes from my life experiences, my memories and my emotions. Poetry, nature and especially the passing of time and the seasons influence the themes that I choose to use. I work to please myself, not for awards, though I've won them, nor for the critics or the public at large. I like to work in series and to try various approaches, rather than confine myself to one style. My work is recognizable for its clarity of line and intuitive use of color.
